Home at last

July 3, 2005

Yes we are finally home after 4 weeks break. After five
years it was good to get away but even better to come home.
As I missed the roos and the Ark.All was pretty well except
for a bushfire on the property. Thanks to the local Rangers
and some caring good friends all was not lost.No deaths
while we were away but sadly to say little Poo-ket was
killed near the house the first Sunday we were home. Broke
my heart again. How do we carry on when we get so attached
to the animals. They are so gental and give so much back to
us everyday.I thank a higher power each day just for them
to make it through another night. All those who have stayed
her know what I am talking about. And for those who do
not, feral dogs and dingo crossed dog are a real threat to
these animals.Kangaroos in this country are regarded as
exspendable. But believe you me at some point people will
see ,with that outlook. We may one day not have the unique
expirence to see them roaming free.Last year there was an
outbreak of disease in the kangaroos. This has been
identified as dog mange. The poor creatures suffer from loss
of fur, large sores and their joints seize up.They usally
die painfully. We believe it is from the feral dog
population. The term feral is only demestic dogs gone
wild. They have a big impact on the native animals. The
rehabilation centre in Darwin was infected last year. As a
result they lost a large precentage of their caged animals
that were ready for release. They did not release on the Ark
as we have remained free of this deadly disease. Maybe soon
they will be looking at releaseing some of the animals that
did survive. Now for a matter closer to my own heart.I must
say this has been the hardest newsletter for me to
write. But in writing it I hope to soothe my spirit just a
little. In August one of our hand raised wallabies had her
throat ripped out by feral dogs. Her nam was Gaby Do's.After
months of intensive treatment she survived.she was a
fighter with the strongest will to live I have ever seen.As
a result of this attact her larynx was crushed and she
could not be released. So she went back to the kind and
loving woman that raised her.She was happy and not alone as
she had three other unreleaseables as company. she also had
a joey in her pouch.Sadly to say some local dogs managed to
get into their enclosure and destroy all but one of these
beautiful animals.amoung them our graceful Gaby.What a
tragic end for this little fighter. But before her death she
managed to through out her joey.We found it hiding under
the blind roo that was not killed. maybe because he was of
no sport to them he survived.what ever the reason the
little one livedand so we named her little Debbie Do's.She
has the fighting spirit of her mother and I see Gaby in her
everyday. When she grows up and is released I know she will
carry some part of gaby with her into the wild.So this is
for Gaby you will always remain in our hearts.
You gave much and
know not that you gave at all ,
For this I bless you most.
What was
given us here we shall keep,
You have walked among us
Your shadow
has been a light upon this earth.
We may give them our love,
We may
house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in
the house of to-morrow.
